QUIET ON THE SET. ACTION.

Last week I was reminded on one of my favorite blogs [stefani greenwood] how amazing the new Dolce & Gabbana campaign is.  These ads shot by Steven Klein look exactly how I’d want all my parties to look – the colors, the furniture, the woman behind the camera. LOVE it.  My favorite aspect though is the reemergence of one of my favorite models, Mariacarla Boscono.  How I’ve missed her beautiful Italian face.

Everything is truly perfect in these photographs.  I want the clothes, I already have thick eyebrows,  and I want to be filmed by a subversive female director.  Maybe I am reading into that last one, but fashion is about imagination, right?

Discount Dolce?

Since my birthday, I have promised myself that I was truly going to accomplish everything I might have pushed to the side previous to 8.23.08.  If you can believe this, visiting the TJ Maxx in La Cañada Flintridge was on my list of things to do ever since I heard of their “Runway” section, which features the cast-aways of previous designer collections.

I should have known better, as those who are close to me know that I totally lose my lunch when I enter a discount store.  Now don’t get me wrong.  I love sales and I love bargains! BUT I cannot stand tossed clothes, growling women, mistreated fabrics, and the overall stench of desperation of those who must own something designer.  As soon as we walked into the “Runway” section, I turned to my boyfriend and said just because these clothes are designer, doesn’t make them good. Furthermore, there is a reason these items made it to the Maxx – they couldn’t cut it at the store they were previously in.

What do we have here?  A military inspired jacket adored with black and gold buttons with a gaudy link chain.  Right up my alley.  Dolce & Gabanna? Even better.  Excuse me, does that price tag read $799.99? Cough. Cough.  I thought this was going to be a cheap excursion, but turned out eight hundred dollars at TJ Maxx is a deal.  Needless to say I didn’t walk away with the Dolce love boat jacket, nor the piles of Vince and Alice & Olivia dresses.

Give me a thrift store any day.  I would rather be in a muggy space with my grandma haggling down a $3 dress than a grossely “Runway” section at TJ Maxx anyday.

Crimes of Fashion: My Counterfeit Prada Phone

I was ecstatic when I read the news via WWD, that “LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton today won a landmark victory against eBay for allowing the sale of counterfeit goods.” Leave it to the French courts to stop the selling of Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Kenzo, and Givenchy on EBay. Merci beacucoup!

I am very passionate against the production, selling, and consuming of counterfeit goods, not only because of my extensive research on the subject, but I recently fell victim to buying something illicit. Not too long ago I lost my beloved gold Dolce & Gabbana Razr. Though devastated, I sought solace in the purchase of a new luxurious PRADA phone. I bought this phone with confidence as it was not from EBay, but rather from a website that touted some great online reviews and one of the first hits on a Google search.

My phone was delivered UPS and from the moment I opened the box I knew I had in my hands a counterfeit phone. My eyes filled with tears, and my stomach ached for the $500 I thought I’ve never get back. The embarrassment of having this contraband and paying such a price devastated me, but after my depression settled, my anger took over and I vowed to seek vengeance on the company who sold me this faux phone. After a ridiculous conversation had with the manager of the company I bought the phone from, I knew I had to seek action in another form – the law! The only problem, the company at fault was located in Chicago, and I was in L.A.

To save you the anxiety of – will she get her $$ back? /did she get her revenge? – lets cut to the final days of my story. After speaking with Chicago Police, the FBI, and the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition Inc (found via Harper’s Bazaar “Fakes are Never in Fashion”) I was given sound advice from two of the three agencies. They suggested I contact the Better Business Bureau, and I did so immdiately. After filling out a claim, and providing evidence, the BBB was prepared to go into arbitration for me. Instead, under the pressure of me and the BBB, the company succumbed to admitting fault and refunded my money back.

It may have taken some time and lots of patience, but it is absolutely wrong to run a shady business selling counterfeit goods. It is pertinent that if you fall victim to an incident as such, that you do not wallow in your embarrassment but instead talk to as many people as possible to help ameliorate your situation. There were many people who thought I was simply wasting my time trying to fight this, but in the end I succeeded and will continue to work against this illicit market.

If you need any advice on how to pursue a similar incident, please feel free to email me as I will try to connect you with the right people.

No More Midterms

School Daze

This has unfortunately been midterm week at school. While reading articles on how KATE MOSS is bad for kids (1993) – um, lets not get into that now because I don’t agree with that statement – I have also been taking notes on the fashion news and sitings all week. I missed out on revealing a photo of Lydia Hearst on Gossip Girl, documenting Gwenyth’s shoes (I still might) and posting the cover of the new Paris Vogue.

Fortunately being at school allows for many ideas, and this one is quite personal. I feel that simply because you are at school (calling all UCLA students) there is no need to put your style on hold in exchange for a frumpy sweatshirt and jeans. I try to wear an ensemble that would impress the coroner if she found me dead from studying way too much. Because of this, I am often stopped by passing students dying to know what I have, where I got it, and how much! It is not my style to start running off the shops and price tags, I can’t have doppelgängers you know, but I have compiled what I would consider my school uniform. In case you already didn’t know, I love the combination of black & gold. (from top left to right)

  1. Daisy by Marc Jacobs, $70 – This fragrance reminds me it is almost summer. I am never without perfume.
  2. Atia Sandal by Delias, $29 – Gladiator sandals you say? Oh, wait until you see my collection!
  3. Airliner Leather Magazine Clutch by MBMJ, $328 – I was weary of a clutch, but this is huge and perfectly fits a magazine. What more could I ask for?
  4. Dolce & Gabbana RAZR, $399.99 – This was one of my most cherished gold numbers, until I lost it in a shady place.
  5. Audrey Tote by Russell & Hazel, $58.00 – My famous attaché, even though that is not the appropriate word for this file tote. This is the piece that gets everyone in a tizzy. Perfect for class!
  6. Stud Bangle by Fallon, $155 – Thank you dear boyfriend for getting me such a lovely bracelet.
  7. Soft Classic Key Pouch by Marc Jacobs, $125 – A Christmas gift from the boyfriend which I absolutely cherish. Wonderfully small for the girl who doesn’t want to lug a huge wallet, in her already huge purse.
