CRUELTY FREE

fi030909

Stella McCartney is one of my absolute favorite designers.  If you’ve ever felt her clothes you know how soft her fabric is and how beautiful the colors are.  Whether it be her line for Adidas, her luggage for Le Sportsac or her own collection, the charcoals, grays and roses have me dying for more.  I cannot forget to mention her crulety-free ethics which is why so many respect what she designs.  Though I have love for Carine and her goat coat, I have just as much love and respect for someone like Stella who has developed such an amazing brand.  I’ve even forgiven Stella for selling me $500 rafia sandals that fell apart in 3 months.  OK, maybe I am still a little mad.

SLEEVE ME ALONE

I support animal rights but when you begin ripping the sleeves off Balenciaga dresses that is where I draw the line!  Accounts of the the aforementioned incident are as such: a crazed PETA protester lunged at Carine Roitfeld outside of Jean Paul Gaultier and ripped the sleeve off  her dress.  Apparently PETA was rather bothered by the lilac goat hair coat Carine was seen sporting this weekend and felt that she needed to learn a lesson.  In proper Carine style she replied to the media’s coverage by saying “I am a fashion martyr now.”

DOUBLE TROUBLE, BOIL & BUBBLE

fi1113082

Since we weren’t allowed to take photographs of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, I bring you this photo of Phuong and I.  We’re both Mary-Kate!  She is everyone’s favorite, right?

The book signing was quite fun.  We waited in line beginning at 430pm and the signing wasn’t until 7pm.  The line wrapped around Borders Westwood and surprisingly, we didn’t see many good looks in the crowd.  I was hoping to see Olsen wannabees or at least ensembles arranged right off the rack at Maxfields.

Mary-Kate and Ashely did not disappoint.  Even though we were bombarded with rules, it was such a pleasure to meet them as they kindly greeted Phuong and I with large smiles and gentle hellos.  I knew they were cute, but they look even better in person.  And don’t get me started on their jewelry and shoes.

So where did those hideous masks come from?  PETA was protesting the Olsens outside the store, and we couldn’t resist grabbing our own hideous faces.  The girls obviously don’t wear bloody fur hats nor deserve being called “the trollsens”, but I love souvenirs.  Besides, I love the battle of fur v. anti-fur.  I’ve been on both sides and now I have no idea where I stand anymore.  That’s why I can love the Olsens but also have fun with the PETA protesters.

Carine puts the F U in FUR

Leave it to Carine Roitfeld to put the F U in Fur in the August issue of VOGUE Paris. Model Raquel Zimmermann, styled by Roitfeld, is seen getting into all sorts of trouble draped in this Fall’s must have furs. Whether she is hitting an activist with her purse or simply saying fuck you with her finger, she looks as if she could care less about what PETA has to say. Apparently so does Carine, as she will undoubtedly be added to their hit list.

Whether you are a fur lover, a paint thrower, or simply indifferent, you have to give it up to a magazine that can have a sense of humor. If you don’t agree, maybe you can appreciate the great photography of Mario Testino as he shot these fur filled pages. Either way, this is one of the reasons Carine Roitfeld and Paris Vogue are tops on my style radar.

Organics to Go

Stella

This Memorial Day weekend gave me some time to clean out my closet, but most importantly time to relax. Of course I had the opportunity to watch the flat screen, and I managed to catch a movie on HBO entitled I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. No doubt this movie left me in an awful depression, but the next day I had some more time to reflect and came up with even more options to make my life more animal and Earth friendly.

Eco-Chic is not merely a trend to the fashion intelligentsia, but a necessity in living the most sustainable life possible.  I had a fabulous course at U.C.L.A. called “Gender and the Environment” and it absolutely blew my mind on how to live.  Since then, our home has become a chic recycling center, our food is always organic/local free of GMOS, our designer duds are given to local thrift shops, and don’t even get me started on my magazine carousel!  BUT WHAT ABOUT THE ANIMALS?  This film tapped into information I had already gathered as a member of Amnesty International and a former vegetarian, but it left me feeling like I had to do more.  Watch, and you’ll undoubtedly feel the same.

Of course when I am sustainable, I ensure that I remain fashionable.  With this in mind, I have vowed to forever support the glorious luxury goods given to us by Stella McCartney.  Even if my $500 Raffia sandals from Spring 07 have fallen apart under minimal wear, I trudge forward because the truth is Stella is unbelievably cool.  I can forget my tattered soles because I still love Stella the fragrance, her line for Adidas, and am a recent convert to her skin care line (thanks for the samples Barneys!)  Up next, the yoga mat, which I’ll be carrying all around downtown.

What will you do to make a difference?

From Top L to R: Adidas by Stella McCartney Yoga Mat $85, Stella McCartney Days-of-the-Week Panties $195.00, Stella Parfum Spray $86, Stella McCartney Hannah Flat $495.00, Stella Care 5 Benefits Moisturizing Cream $76
